Mississippi Personhood Amendment

I usually don't have much to say about politics, but saw this on daystarsearcher's journal and thought I'd pass along because the implications here are a little scary.

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

Completely random observation

So, I watched an episode of the UK Law & Order, mostly out of curiosity and a bit out of boredom and I really can tell you vey little about the episode because I was incredibly distracted by the fact that Jaime Bamber is British. After watching him on Battlestar Galactica, that was like the first time I heard James Marsters speak in his normal American accent - it was just weird. In my head I blindly believe James Marsters is really British and take his stint on Torchwood as proof of that belief.

Also watched that new show Prime Suspect...

just in case there's spoilers...Collapse )

Ok. I need ideas. Please.

Ok, so since Battlestar Galactica has pretty much taken over my brain, I decided to sign up for the girl saves boy fic-a-thon to maybe help quell the growing obsession. The question is what to do? With so many kick ass female characters who do I choose to center on and whom exactly is she saving? And from what? Or should I do a female duo?

Help me brainstorm please?

I think my landlord really is going to sabotage me. I called to get my lease date and never heard back after he told me he'd call me in the morning and after I called the next day. So Monday I included a letter with my rent check and dropped it off asking to please call to review my lease and have called this week and left yet another message that has not and probably will not be returned.

The apartment I was hoping for isn't going to work out and the two I saw today were not worth their monthly rent. The complex I want to be in will have an apartment in November, which could work if my landlord would be willing to be flexible with me but I can't get him to return my calls. And there's never anyone in the office when I'm home (not that I think they'd be helpful based on the one experience I had). But God, apartment hunting is stressful enough, I don't need to be paranoid about not being able to move in the first place or the fact that I don't even know when I technically have to be out of here -- how can I sign a lease or even spend a months rent to hold another apartment when I don't even know when I can leave!

I just I don't even know what to do.

I'm going to look at a place tomorrow and I have a couple places I'm waiting to hear back from to go and see what they have.

I wish I could just Tabitha my way through things.
